Three in a Row for Durham Cathedral!

Durham Cathedral has been crowned the UK’s most popular Cathedral, the third national accolade awarded to Durham Cathedral in just two months.

In February 2017, Durham Cathedral was voted as Britain’s Favourite Cathedral in the LandLove Magazine Awards followed by the announcement that Durham Cathedral had been crowned BBC Countryfile Magazine’s Heritage Site of the Year on 14 March 2017.

Now, Durham Cathedral has beaten off stiff competition from 12 other Cathedrals to be named the UK’s most popular Cathedral in an online competition organised by the UK’s leading holiday rentals site HolidayLettings (owned by TripAdvisor).

With 36% of the vote, Durham Cathedral was the clear winner followed by Lincoln Cathedral in 2nd place with 28% of the vote and Lichfield Cathedral in 3rd place with 23% of the vote. Overall, 13,799 votes were cast for Durham Cathedral.

The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, Dean of Durham, said: “We are delighted to hear that Durham Cathedral has received yet another national award. All three accolades have been awarded to Durham Cathedral following a public vote, reflecting the enduring charm and popularity of Durham Cathedral.

“Durham Cathedral is a special place which we all know and love, and we hope that by winning these national awards many more people will be encouraged to visit Durham and experience this magnificent Cathedral for themselves. Thank you to everyone who voted in the competition to find the UK’s most popular Cathedral and congratulations to Lincoln Cathedral and Lichfield Cathedral, the worthy runners up.”

Saskia Welman, Senior Communications Manager for TripAdvisor said: “The cathedrals competition has been our most popular and successful to date, with thousands of votes cast over the last few weeks. Durham Cathedral was a front runner from the start and we are delighted that it has won this accolade.

“Many people commented on the article stating how wonderful the Cathedral is and it’s fantastic to see the local community support one of their treasures so vigorously. Congratulations to Durham!”

Durham Cathedral has been a place of welcome, worship and hospitality for almost a millennium and now welcomes over 750,000 visitors each year. Part of the Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site, Durham Cathedral is renowned as one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe and the resting place of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. It also boasts the most intact surviving set of medieval monastic buildings in the UK, now home to the new world-class visitor experience Open Treasure.
