Dover Castle's Tours Exclusively for Groups

Early access tours, exclusively for groups, have just been introduced by English Heritage deep inside the popular Secret Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle. And, also for the first time, groups can now enjoy private guided tours of King Henry II’s technicolour Great Tower.

Operation Dynamo Tunnel Tours take in the gripping visitor experience in the Secret Wartime Tunnels. Running deep beneath the famous White Cliffs, they housed the nerve-centre of operations for Winston Churchill and Vice Admiral Ramsay as they masterminded the evacuation of 338,000 British and French troops from Dunkirk in 1940. They also secretly housed 700 servicemen and women who carried out the vital business of manning telephone exchanges, plotting the progress of ships and aircraft, and even operating on wounded troops. After their Tunnel Tour, groups can also visit underground hospital to see where the casualties of war were treated.

Great Tower Tours take in King Henry II’s magnificent 12th-century palace, standing at the heart of Dover Castle. Powerful King Henry, whose massive kingdom stretched across Europe, built the Great Tower to royally entertain and impress international pilgrims, as they travelled to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury. Visitors today will be equally impressed by the recreation of the king’s colourful display of wealth, as expert guides lead them through the private chambers, guest rooms, kitchen, armouries and great hall.

Ideal for GTOs and operators planning a tight itinerary, the tours guarantee their groups will have a special personal tour of these two castle hot spots – and avoid the queues which can occur at busy times.

For groups of 15 – 30, the tours can be pre-booked up to two weeks ahead. There are three price options:
• Operation Dynamo Tunnel Tour - £12 per person (bookable at 9.30am and 9.45am)
• Great Tower Tour - £10 per person
• Combined Tunnel and Great Tower Tour - just £17 per person, giving £5 off the combined price

Each per person tour price is in addition to the castle’s discounted group admission* and includes a choice of either a souvenir Dover Castle guidebook, or a tea or Americano coffee and cake, for each group member.

Other highlights to enjoy at Dover Castle include the cliff-edge WWI Fire Command Post with an original anti-aircraft gun, Roman lighthouse, Anglo-Saxon church, Battlement Walks and Medieval Underground Works – just some of the aspects of the its 2,000 year history to discover.

*Groups of 11 or more people receive a 15% discount at all English Heritage properties and events (10% at Stonehenge). A tour leader and coach driver are admitted free with each group.
