Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre 2017 Events

With 36 acres to explore and over 40 exhibits to visit, there is so much to discover, learn and have fun at Amberley Museum. The Museum is dedicated to preserving the industrial heritage of the South East.

Exhibits include our communications building, electricity hall, working printshop, and the lime kilns which date back to when the site was a working chalk quarry. The Museum is also home to traditional crafts people such as the wheelwrights and blacksmith. You can also take a ride on the narrow gauge railway and historic buses to explore around the museum. We have our own on-site café serving hot and cold food, and picnic areas around the site. The Museum is accessibility friendly and dogs are also welcome on site but must be kept on a lead at all times. We have been awarded the Kennel Club ‘Best Dog Friendly Attraction Award’ for Days Out 2016.

Wednesday 15th to Friday 24th February - Opening week
As the Museum prepares for the new season, come along and see what is new for 2017. With our first Toddler Tuesday of the season is on the 21st February, they will be looking at wonderful wheels around the Museum in a fun filled morning of activities for children aged 0-5. Also our first activity Wednesday on the 22nd February, Mr Pepper’s Chalk day, will be looking at the history of the Museum. So come along and discover, learn and have fun at Amberley Museum. This week we will have a special entry rate at the Child price of £6 per person (or £6.60 with GiftAid) under 4’s go free.

Sunday 19th February – Art@Amberley
New events for 2017, come and explore a new interest or skill, or just have fun with art. Each Art@Amberley event will explore a different skill. This month will be looking at lino printing (at an additional cost of £3). Pre-booking is advised as you are guaranteed your space on the day and you also will receive a reduced entrance price. Each person that books will only be charged £5 plus any extra cost for the art. Standard Museum entry applies on the day. Please visit our website for more information.

Sunday 26th February – Teacher and Group Travel Open Day
With free entry for all pre-booked teachers and group travel organisers. Come and find out how Amberley Museum can entertain your visitors or help you inspire your pupils to learn outside the classroom. Friday 10th to Sunday 12th March – Amberley Springfest
This is the second year of our spring beer festival, featuring a select range of Sussex ales and ciders, running on the Friday and Saturday evenings (pre-booked tickets advised), and on the Saturday and Sunday daytimes (normal museum entry applies), Sunday is drink up day.

Friday 10th to 19th March – Science Event
Explore science and its history at the Museum. Each day there will be a selection of demonstrations around the Museum, to learn the science behind some of our exhibits. Discover, learn and have fun and follow the science trail around the site.

Saturday 25th March – Art@Amberley
A new event for 2017, come and explore a new interest or skill, or just have fun with art. Each Art@Amberley event will explore a different skill. This month will be looking at sewing Felt flowers (no additional cost applies). Pre-booking is advised as you are guaranteed your space on the day and you also will receive a reduced entrance price. Sunday 26th March – Mums Can Do
A special day of hands on activities including crafts for children. With crafts, pottery and train driving experiences (subject to availability) for the Mums. With our steam trains running this day, and birds of prey displays from Hawking About, there will be lots to entertain the whole family. For this day we will be offering free entry for one Mum with each accompanying paying child (not in conjunction with any other offer).

Saturday 1st April – Fooling Around
A new event for 2017, come and join in the fun on our April fool’s day. With visiting performers, take part in circus activities and learn a new skill (some additional costs may apply). Visit our website for more information.

Sunday 2nd April – Vintage Car Show
With a wonderful display of visiting car exhibitors, the cars tell the history of motoring over half a century through to the nineteen fifties, by which time the first of the motorways was on the horizon. With our resident steam trains enjoy riding the railway around the site.

Sunday 9th April – Spring Industrial Trains
The first opportunity this year to see steam, diesel, and petrol locos out and about around the Museum, featuring our eclectic collection of passenger and industrial rolling stock. Also, demonstration runs with the Road Machines contractors’ monorail.

Wednesday 12th April – Monday 17th April – Easter Trails
Come and enjoy the festive fun at Amberley Museum by taking part in our Easter trail around the Museum. Following the clues, can you find all the answers to win a prize? We also have Hawking About with their birds of prey displays on Wednesday 12th April and on Easter Sunday 16th April. Also our activity day on Wednesday is a fun filled day of activities for children of all ages. On the Friday 14th, Sunday 16th and Monday 17th enjoy our steam days with our resident steam trains riding the railway around the site.

Saturday 22nd April – Art@Amberley
A new event for 2017, come and explore a new interest or skill, or just have fun with art. Each Art@Amberley event will explore a different skill. This month will be looking at Candle Making (at an additional cost £3 per candle). Pre-booking is advised as you are guaranteed your space on the day and you also will receive a reduced entrance price. Each person that books will only be charged £5 plus any extra cost for the art. Sunday 23rd April – Amberley Bus Riders Day
Enjoy your first opportunity of the season to ride the historic buses around the museum, with a wonderful display of our Museum buses and some visiting exhibitors. Also enjoy our steam days with our resident steam trains riding the railway around the site.

Saturday 29th April – Brownie Day
Exploring the site with activities especially for the Brownies to discover, learn and have fun at the Museum. A chance for pre-booked Brownie Packs to achieve their Science Investigator Badge, along with birds of prey displays from Hawking About for which the Brownie packs will be given their own allocated time to see this demonstration. Also on this day our resident steam trains will be riding the railway around the site, as the Museum is also open to the general public.

Sunday 30th April – Spring Mechanicals Day
With a collection of stationary engines, associated machinery to watch and enjoy, our exhibitors providing stationary engines on display highlighting the history of industry and technology from a time gone by. We aim to provide something of interest for both the enthusiast and the general public, by presenting a crosssection of engines and their associated machinery.

Sunday 7th May – Motorcycle Event
Our Motorcycle show will host a wide cross-section of machines for the education and entertainment of the public, which will provide an enjoyable day for visitors and exhibitors in the picturesque grounds of the Museum. This show aims to celebrate the history of British Motorcycling with Motorcycles up to 1990. On this day beautifully maintained motorcycles will cruise their way into the museum to showcase their history and style. This is a real treat for all bike fans. Also on this day our resident steam trains will be riding the railway around the site.

Saturday 13th May – Art@Amberley
A new event for 2017, come and explore a new interest or skill, or just have fun with art. Each Art@Amberley event will explore a different skill. This month will be looking at Tie Dying with a difference (an additional cost of £3). Pre-booking is advised as you are guaranteed your space on the day and you also will receive a reduced entrance price. Each person that books will only be charged £5 plus any extra cost for the art. Sunday 14th May – Commercial Vehicles
This event will host a display of interesting and historic commercial vehicles from before and after the Second World War. Also enjoy our steam days with our resident steam trains riding the railway around the site.

Sunday 14h May - Borgward Drivers Club Visit
Come and see a group of up to 40 Borgward vehicles here at Amberley Museum for part of the day. The club are meeting at Arundel Castle on the 13th and coming down to Amberley Museum on the 14th. The Club formed in 1980 caters for all Borgward vehicles and organises UK and International meetings annually, later this year they plan to do Route 66 in their cars. Borgward owners from the UK and Europe will be bringing their cars and commercial vehicles to Amberley Museum for this years International UK get together. The Bremen Germany based Borgward company ceased trading in 1961 having produced over 200,000 of the most popular model the Isabella between 1954 to 1961 along many other vehicles.

Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May – Military Vehicle and Home Front Weekend

A weekend of nostalgia and history to go back in time to the wartime period. Dress up and be part of this great historic event, and on the Sunday take part in the evacuee train. A vintage hairdresser will be on site to finish your look for the day, and music and dances to enjoy. Watch re-enactments, dioramas, military vehicles and enjoy period bus rides. A great day out with so much to see and for the whole family to enjoy.

Also enjoy our steam days with our resident steam trains riding the railway around the site. Saturday 27th to Monday 29th May – Traditional Crafts Weekend Over the May Bank Holiday we have many visiting craftspeople, some demonstrating their skills and techniques. Along with our resident craftspeople, this is a great opportunity to see many traditional crafts from our past. Many stalls will be selling their craftwork. Also enjoy our steam days with our resident steam trains riding the railway around the site.
