This property began as a 12th-century manor house and achieved castle status in the 15th century, when it was developed by Edward IV’s friend, Lord Hastings. Its colourful past includes a visit from Mary Queen of Scots and extensive damage during the Civil War but plenty remains to be admired - including an impressive climb to the top of the 24-metre (78-foot) tower and an underground passage from the kitchen.
