The Alnwick Garden is one of the world’s most contemporary gardens. The Duchess of Northumberland describes it as “an inspiring landscape with beautiful gardens, unique features all brought to life with water.” Certainly the Wirtz International design represents a remarkable combination of spaces, themes, quirkiness and play.

Home to Europe's largest wooden Treehouse, The Alnwick Garden boasts the beauty of the Ornamental Garden, the splendour of the Grand Cascade, the mysteries of the Bamboo Labyrinth, the spell-binding water sculptures of the Serpent Garden and the intrigue of the Poison Garden.

No two visits are the same as each season brings a new lease of life to the stunning features and specially selected plants and flower. Spring is an exciting time as many thousands of bulbs appear, heralding the start of the new season. Snowdrops, magnolias and daffodils burst into life followed by tulips in deepest purple, chionodoxa, scilla, white anemone and pink camellias.

In May, the Cherry Orchard is transformed as it becomes a cloud of white cherry blossom, carpeted with thousands of specially selected flowers that will be revealed for the first time this year. In summer, the towering blue delphiniums are a highlight of the Ornamental Garden, a strikingly geometric garden with the country’s largest collection of European plants. The David Austin Rose Garden, swathed with honeysuckle and clematis and home to over 200 species of rose, including The Alnwick Rose, rewards further exploration. With the arrival of autumn, The Alnwick Garden changes again, from the chameleon-like transformation of the hornbeams that border the Grand Cascade, to the flowering of hydrangeas, asters and chrysanthemums which add splashes of colour. The crab apple hedges glow with bright red and yellow crabs, creating stunning bands of colour on the UK's only crab apple pleaching.

Winter is the perfect time to appreciate the strong green structure of the Wirtz design. There are bursts of vivid colour from the winter-flowering cherry and the ripened crab apples in the Ornamental Garden. Winter frosts emphasise the striking bones of The Alnwick Garden and set the scene for the icy Grand Cascade's magnificent water displays. As the winter nights draw in, The Alnwick Garden transforms the dark evenings into a stunning spectacle of light and colour.

This year's visit will be enhanced by the introduction of the fully interactive The Alnwick Garden App. A varied programme of events and entertainments further ensures a memorable day.

The Alnwick Garden is a garden with a purpose. It is a registered charity (registered charity number: 1095435) that places people at its heart, whether they be individuals or part of a community. As well as standing for contemporary gardening excellence, The Alnwick Garden stimulates change through play, learning, the arts, healthy activity, addressing disability and the economic renaissance of a rural community. The Alnwick Garden Trust, which manages and delivers The Alnwick Garden's community projects, is dedicated to providing an exciting and varied programme that benefits people of all ages and backgrounds. The projects aim to engage with people in an authentic way, and the Trust listens carefully to participants' needs and interests, allowing them to shape and grow the programmes.
