Dover Castle offers one of the best group days out in the country. Commanding the gateway to the realm for over nine centuries, the fortress has been at the heart of some of the most significant events in England’s history. From the top of Henry II’s Great Tower, to the depths of the evocative tunnels (used during medieval, Napoleonic and world war conflicts) there’s no shortage of things to see and do. The opportunity to see a rare anti-aircraft gun in action ensures your group visit will go with a bang.

  • Step into the vibrant world of Henry II’s medieval royal palace and follow lifelike hologram figures round the private chambers, guest rooms and great hall, along with the kitchen and armouries. On selected days of the year, meet costumed live interpreters.
  • After immersing yourself in life at the 12th-century court, climb to the roof of the Great Tower for amazing panoramic views over the huge medieval castle - one of the strongest in England.
  • Intrepid groups can explore the medieval Underground Works; passages burrowed beneath the castle during its epic 1216-17 sieges. Beware steep steps.
  • Enjoy the unique experience of the Secret Wartime Tunnels, telling the story of the 1940 ‘Miracle of Dunkirk’ using film, audio and archive photography. Witness the evacuation of over 300,000 British and Allied troops as the rescue operation is played out before your eyes.
  • Take a fascinating guided tour of the separately accessed Underground Hospital. Relive the tension as a surgeon battles to save an injured pilot.

TOP TIP

Make the most of the newly introduced early access tours and visit the Secret Wartime Tunnels before public opening time. We’re now also offering private guided tours of the Great Tower, including refreshments. These must be booked in advance – please call to arrange.
