Would you give away your family home for your political beliefs? Sir Richard Acland did just this with his estate, at 2,590 hectares (6,400 acres), one of the largest the Trust has acquired (20 farms and 250 cottages).

Killerton House, built in 1778-9, brings to life generations of Aclands, one of Devon’s oldest families. The family bedrooms now house this year’s historic fashion exhibition ‘Objects of Desire’, fashion to die for. The garden, created by John Veitch, is Killerton’s highlight. Beautiful year-round, it features ancient rhododendrons, magnolias, rare trees and views of the surrounding rolling Devon countryside.

Note: Garden open every day of the year, including Christmas Day. Killerton is close to the M5 and Exeter (only six miles) and is a useful stopping-off point en route to and from Cornwall.
