The Shuttleworth Collection is open to view every day (except for the Christmas to New Year week) and is also famous for its regular flying displays when, during the summer season, all of the airworthy aircraft are flown, re-creating flying during the Edwardian period, the First World War, peacetime years of the twenties and early thirties and then World War Two.

3. NGS Open Day at the Swiss Garden

Since its foundation, the National Gardens Scheme has donated £50 million to charities across the UK. Around 3,700 gardens open each year for the National Garden Scheme. The Swiss Garden is pleased to support this worthwhile cause, and donates a proportion of its NGS open day’s admission fees to the charity.
                           
Seasonal interest in the garden includes Snowdrops, Hellebores and a range of wonderfully scented shrubs including the lovely Winter Honeysuckle and Christmas Box. Views across the garden are opened up due to the lighter tree canopy in Winter, and the first daffodils are beginning to display.

5. Workshop: Floristry

Led by Advanced Floristry students at Shuttleworth College, this lovely workshop will allow you to create a floral arrangement for your Easter table or festivities, or as a thoughtful and hand-crafted gift for someone special. 7. Workshop: Planting Design

Pick up expert tips from RHS and Chelsea Flower Show award winning garden designer Philippa Pearson on the use of plants to create stunning displays in your garden.  Tips on how to choose the right plant for the right place and to create a garden with structure and interest throughout the season.  Using the Swiss Garden as a base for looking at garden design and planting layouts, this workshop will enhance your plant knowledge and design skills.
 
The event ticket includes entry to the garden – feel free to explore the delights of the Swiss Garden during the afternoon and see examples of early season planting.

10. Parkland Tour

11. Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

Watch Morris and Maypole dancing displays at our Mad Hatter’s Tea Party event, with opportunities to join in during timed afternoon sessions. Be entertained by Alice in Wonderland characters and features in the fairy-tale surroundings of the Swiss Garden – the perfect setting for fun and fantasy!

12. Season Premiere and RAF Centenary

Shuttleworth’s Season Premiere this year is proud to be part of the RAF 100 celebrations marking the Centenary of the Royal Air Force (RAF) throughout 2018. Expect to enjoy a thrilling air display, and ground activities with a STEM focus that will be engaging for the next generation of innovators as well as entertainment for the whole family.
 
The Collection’s own aircraft span 1909 through to 1950, and is home to some of the last remaining airworthy aircraft of their type. Our newly restored Spitfire is the subject of the pilot chat – don’t miss it!

13. NGS Open Day

From 14:00-16:00 the talented Caroline Riches will be creating beautiful music with the hammered dulcimer.
 
Seasonal interest in May includes a lovely display of rhododendrons, along with late daffodils, tulips and other Spring bulbs. Early roses are often in flower, and the herbaceous planting around the garden is at its best at this time of the year.

15. Fly Navy

Fly Navy is a celebration of naval heritage aircraft from the early 1900s to 1960s. This event is supported by the outstanding work of Fly Navy Heritage Trust, who have secured a memorable line-up of extraordinary and historic aircraft for a thrilling show.
 
The pilot chat is about the BAE systems owned Avro Anson, with its new colour scheme.

17. Hurricane Heritage R4118 Photography Day

Ever wanted to sit in the cockpit of a 1940s Hawker Hurricane?
 
Based at The Shuttleworth Collection, Hurricane R4118 is widely regarded as one of the most historic British aircraft to survive in flying condition from the Second World War.
 
This special Hurricane Heritage event is a close-up and personal photography day led by well known aviation photographer Darren Harbar, with the special opportunity to take a seat in this historic Battle of Britain fighter!* With training and practical advice, enjoy the chance to take great period images of Hawker Hurricane R4118 in its natural grass airfield environment. Teaching technique and camera skills advice will be available for those who need it, and the day includes a static photography session with a ‘Battle of Britain pilot’ re-enactor.
 
Special extras include: The chance to meet the aircraft owner, James Brown to find out more about this aircraft and why it’s so special; A Hurricane Heritage pilot’s chat about what it’s like to fly the Hawker Hurricane, the chance to experience the thrill of sitting inside the cockpit itself * and entry to the Collection.

18. Chapterhouse Theatre Company Presents ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ (open air theatre)

19. Workshop: Pottery Painting
Saturday 30 June 2018

 
Led by local ceramic artist Eve Carroll and drawing inspiration from the wonderful surroundings of the Swiss Garden, this creative art session will focus on nature, wildlife and some of the 18th century architectural elements found in the garden.
 
Participants will be encouraged to sketch out a design based on their own particular interests, and will learn how to transfer those drawings onto tiles using ceramic paint. All ceramic paints are water-based and there will be a wide range of soft, natural colours to choose from. Once the paint is applied, the tiles will be left to dry and coated with a layer of transparent glaze back at Eve’s studio – they can then be collected from the visitor centre at Shuttleworth after a 2-week period, or posted to participants.*
 
This lovely workshop will allow you to explore your creativity and to produce your own beautifully painted ceramic tile to enjoy at home or give to someone special as a personalised gift.

21. July Evening Airshow

Classic flying evenings at Shuttleworth have a relaxed atmosphere, and are where the light can be at its best to see the Edwardian aircraft if the weather is calm and favourable enough for these incredible aircraft to take to the skies. This unique collection of aircraft from the early and pioneering years of aviation are quite unlike any found anywhere else in the UK and really have to be seen flying!
 
With typical evening summer light excellent for photography, on site refreshments will be available including a bar. There’s a free Swiss Garden tour available and our vintage buses will be running for free passenger rides.
 
Take advantage of the lovely summer weather to stay over at Shuttleworth’s camping and caravan facilities, and enjoy a whole weekend of entertainment with discounted entry to The Collection and Swiss Garden on non-event days.

23. The Shuttleworth Family Airshow

As part of Shuttleworth’s August programme of family fun, this event is packed fun of activities to keep everyone entertained, from grandparents to grandtots! The air display includes many visiting aircraft who will deliver thrilling aerobatics.
 
The pilot chat is about the Chipmunk, the first taste of flying for many former members of the ATC.

24. Chapterhouse Theatre Company Presents ‘Robin Hood and His Merry Men’ at the Swiss Garden

Robin Hood and his band of merry men are feared by the richest of the land who travel through Sherwood Forest as they steal from the rich to give to the poor. When the evil Sheriff of Nottingham schemes to stop the outlaws, the merry men must join with the beautiful Maid Marian to rescue Robin from the Sheriff’s evil clutches and restore peace to the forest lands. Inspired by folklore, myth and legend, this brand-new version of Robin’s notorious story is brought alive with traditional sword play, song, music, dance and stunning medieval costumes. Adapted by award winning writer Laura Turner.
