Mount Stewart is one of the most unique and unusual gardens that the Trust owns. It contains a rich tapestry of design and the great planting artistry that was the hallmark of Edith, Lady Londonderry.


The mild climate of Strangford Lough allows astonishing levels of planting experimentation. The formal areas exude a string Mediterranean feel and resemble an Italian villa landscape, the the wooded areas support a range of plants from all corners of the world – ensuring something to see whatever the season. Engaging tours of the opulent house reveal its fascinating heritage and historic world-famous artefacts and artwork. 

Note: a major conservation project is being undertaken at Mount Stewart House. Durinng this time, the house will remain open for group visits, however on some occasions specific areas may be closed off to allow for essential structural repairs. This important conservation work will ensure this fascinating house and its contents are protected for many years to come. 

Special Interest Tours:

Restoration and Conservation in Action 
A guided tour of this historic mansion with the added interest of seeing the house as it undergoes vital restoration work. The tour will include a visit to the conservation studio where you may be able to see the resident conservators working on their projects. Duration: 30 minutes.

Restoration Behind the Scenes 
A unique peek 'behind the scenes' on a specialist guided tour of the much-loved historic house revealing hidden gems, fascinating stories and some amazing facts. Learn about vital restoration work taking place and see the conservation studio and exhibition. The tour can also include a visit to the joiners' workshop. Duration: 35 minutes.

The Formal Garden
A magical tour of this fascinating garden crammed with exotic plants from around the world that thrive in this unique micro climate. Your guide will unravel the intricate layers behind the history and design of the symbolic plantings, which display the playful artistry of their clever, vivacious and energetic creator. Duration: 30 minutes.

The Mount Stewart Gardens
Tour the formal garden, Pleasure Ground and a glorious lake, surrounded by gently wooded hills. The varied plant collection from around the globe particularly features Southern Hempisphere specimens. Also admire the wonderful artistry of the Stewart family burial ground - Tir N'an Og, the Land of the Ever Young. Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes.
