The Foundations of St John’s Hospital were established in 1135 when it became place of hospitality , adjacent to the City gate, for pilgrims visiting the shrine of St Chad. In 1495, St John’s became an Almshouse with the establishing of one of the most striking Tudor Buildings in the country, famous for its chimneys, which are some of the oldest domestic chimneys in existence. The beautiful Chapel has one of the finest Twentieth Century stained glass windows in the world created by John Piper. St John’s is a place of tranquillity with much historic interest and is well worth a visit.
