Set against a backdrop of verdant woodland, this fort offers groups the chance to see Roman rule through a Victorian lense. Chesters is the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort in Britain and once housed a regiment from northern Spain. It also tells the story of John Clayton, the Victorian lawyer and landowner who saved much of the Wall from destruction. The Clayton Museum transports groups back to the Victorian era as they explore the hundreds of Roman antiquities on display. Outside there’s plenty of space to roam freely and interpretation helps depict life in the seven-acre fort.

  • Pick up an e-reader and have all the facts at your fingertips as you explore the Clayton Museum.

  • See Britain’s best-preserved military bath-house, where weary soldiers relaxed with hot, cold and steam baths.

  • Absorb the digital reconstructions to understand how Roman cavalry, together with their horses, lived and worked here.
