One of Ireland’s most ancient towns, it takes its name from a
dún (fort), which stood on the hill that dominates the town
where Down Cathedral stands. Attractions include The Saint
Patrick Visitor Centre; Down County Museum - in the former
Gaol; Down Cathedral, a place of pilgrimage & prayer, open to
visitors (the remains of St. Patrick are reputedly buried adjacent
to here); Downpatrick & County Railway - Ireland’s only full sized heritage railway built on the town’s former rail-link to Belfast.
