The busy seaport of Foynes , on the N69 Scenic Route, part of the Wild Atlantic Way, served as Ireland’s first transatlantic airport from 1939 -1947. It was to Foynes that the first transatlantic passenger flights from the United States arrived in 1939, and it was in Foynes in 1943 that Chef Joe Sheridan invented the world’s most famous drink ‘Irish Coffee’. The Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum, recalls this past and features the world’s only full size replica Boeing B314 Flying Boat.
