Monastic ruin or romantic folly? The breathtaking designed landscape of the Aislabies, now a World Heritage Site with more than 800 years of history, includes the ruins of the once-wealthy and powerful Fountains Abbey.
You can step back in time to see how the abbey ruins became a spectacular folly for 18th-century visitors as you journey through these gardens of pleasure. You will need plenty of time to explore the 323 hectares (800 acres) of medieval deer parkland, formal Georgian water gardens, Victorian high Gothic church, Jacobean manor house and monastic grounds; including the only surviving Cistercian corn mill. Note: cared for in partnership with English Heritage.
