This is Old Oswestry Hillfort: spectacular, mysterious and the 3000 year old starting point for one of Britain’s oldest settlements: Oswestry.
The border market town of Oswestry sits proudly on the North West corner of Shropshire right on the Welsh border. A curious kind of betwixt and between, Oswestry often has the feel of a Welsh town in England. Today, this thriving market town enjoys a growing reputation for award-winning independent shops along with a bustling festival and arts culture. On a traditional market day, the street scene hasn't much changed in years. Certainly Wilfred Owen, the Oswestry-born WW1 soldier and poet, would recognise it still and not be surprised to hear the mix of voices, sometimes English, sometimes Welsh.
History remains large in Oswestry and the landscape is steeped with the harrowing battle stories of King Oswald, Penda and Owain Glyndwr but now flower bordered lanes and huge views entrance our visitors. Walk amongst the Welsh Hills and Offa's Dyke or take a stroll along the Shropshire Union canal part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, to experience some of the deep treasures this area has to offer.
Our award-winning Indoor Market is open each Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and Outdoor Markets are held every Wednesday and Saturday and our local Artisan Market is normall held on the last Friday of each month. In addition to the markets is a local museum and art galleries. Oswestry is the birthplace of Wilfred Owen, the famous war poe, and also boasts a beautiful, award-winning park, a large numbr of quality independent retailers and many architectural delights. Please call to arrange for your coach party to meet and greet and directions to the centralised drop off point.
