Gibside is a forest garden created by one of the richest men in Georgian England, offering fantastic views, miles of walks, fascinating historic buildings and wide open spaces. It’s also the setting of Mary Eleanor Bowes’ true story of torture and escape from her ruthless husband, inspiration for a Stanley Kubrick film. After centuries of neglect we’re bringing Gibside to life by restoring the gardens for people and wildlife, so there’s always something new to discover.
