Discover Darlington's story of engineering, ideas, and invention. Darlington changed the world as a pioneer of the modern railway. Hopetown Darlington engages and inspires the innovators of the future by connecting them with our pioneering railway heritage.
Open all year for group visits, we have an exciting range of tours, including free self-guided tours and a curator or director led tour of North Road Station Museum. Within our three early-railway heritage buildings, plus our new-build locomotive workshop – all housing over 30,000 items from our collection - there is always something of interest to everyone.
North Road Station Museum details the history of Stockton & Darlington Railway and Darlington’s internationally significant railway heritage.
The Carriage Works contains The Stores and the Exhibition Hall. The Stores is an open-access facility for you to get up-close and personal with our historic railway collection, and the Exhibition Hall which will play host to visiting exhibitions and events all year round.
Darlington Locomotive Works is the home of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust who are currently building the UK’s newest steam locomotive, the P2 class No.2007 Prince of Wales. The locomotive will be the most powerful steam locomotive to ever run on the British rail network. You can view the construction from the viewing gallery located above the workshop!
The Goods Shed is the main entrance to the site and is where you will find our café and shop - Clocktower Café and Hopetown Goods & Gifts. The café offers a selection of hot and cold drinks, snacks, and meals. Coach drop-off is close to the main entrance, with off-site parking available. Divers receive a voucher for free refreshments.
