There’s a chance for your group to learn about every aspect of a Roman soldier’s life at Housesteads: from what they wore and the tools and weapons they used, to the deities they worshipped and their medical practices. Set on the wild Whin Sill escarpment and flanked by dramatic stretches of Wall, the soldiers who lived here were self-sufficient within the fort. Some of the sights groups can enjoy include well-preserved barracks, a hospital, the Commander’s house and, of course, the all-important heating systems and communal toilets.

  • Stand on the edge of a formidable empire and take in awe-inspiring 360-degree vantage points – some of the best along the entire length of the Wall.

  • Experience the modern, interactive museum which includes objects from Roman life 2,000 years ago and a stimulating film that recreates the original fort.

  • Take the Housesteads Trail, covering some of the most tranquil parts of Northumberland National Park and incorporating a fine stretch of Roman turrets.

TOP TIP

Make sure your group is prepared for an uphill walk to the fort and museum. It’s well worth the effort, but those who prefer to stay at car park level can enjoy the visitor centre there.
