The Museum takes you back through time to explore the story of the Lake District and its inhabitants. Recreated period rooms and workshops reveal how rural people lived and worked and played and how different life was before the introduction of machinery. Discover a Lake District kitchen, complete with traditional recipes and utensils, a bedroom full of vernacular furniture and furnishings – including a magnificent 17th century four-poster bed, a farmhouse parlour with a working phonograph and rare 18th century oak panelling.
Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry, managed by the Lakeland Arts Trust.

Bringing the Lakes alive
The rich history of the Lake District is fascinating, and you can discover it right here. Set in Abbot Hall’s handsome coach house this is a totally immersive family-friendly experience. Step back in time to discover, explore and touch a forgotten way of life. Listen to the sounds of a Lakeland street. Dress up in traditional Lakeland clothing. Enter a Victorian bedroom. Learn about Arthur Ransom’s ‘Swallows and Amazons’.
See a unique display of vibrant images recording the changing moods of the Lakeland landscape. All this, and Abbot Hall Art Gallery, is set in riverside parkland and just a short level walk into Kendal’s busy town centre.
Eat, drink, meet and browse
The Abbot Hall Coffee House serves a great range of drinks, cakes and filling snacks, and there’s even outside seating to make the most of this beautiful riverside location. If you’ve been really inspired by what you’ve seen then our Gallery and Museum Shops are there to tempt you with a wealth of books, souvenirs, cards, artists’ materials and limited edition prints.
