Close to Henley, Marlow and a stones through from London is the ancient home of the Stonor family. Dating back to the twelfth century this has been home to the family for over 850 years. Nestled in a Chiltern Valley, the house dominates a magnificent view of the beautiful deer park and woodland. The medieval building has a Jacobian façade, stepping inside you will see Georgian and gothic revival as well as a medieval barrel ceiling which is extremely rare. On display are the families collection of artefacts and art from around the world. You will also be able to view the work of St Edmund Campion who was given refuge here in 1581. We host a variety of events throughout the season, please refer to our website for further details.
As you stroll through the parklands, home to fallow deer, red kites, ravens and buzzards, you will meet our oldest resident a perfectly preserved prehistoric stone circle.
Spring sees the house surrounded by a wonderful display of yellow from the daffodils and spring flowers. As summer approaches you will see iris, old fashioned roses, peonies and lavenders starting to bloom on the seventeenth century terraces of the Italian garden, all hidden behind the house. Beyond the lily pond and peonies is an unusual Japanese tea house built by the 5th Lord Camoys in the early part of the last century. Walking past the kitchen gardens you go through to the nut trees and arboretum.
Sample delicious food and drink served in the Stonor Pantry – situated in the medieval hall or should you wish to stay out in the park our Pit Stop Café within the visitor centre will offer a great cup of coffee!
This year sees the introduction of many new events ranging from musical promos in the park to a Christmas fair and an opportunity to see the house decorated for a Victorian Christmas.
We look forward to welcoming old friends and new.
