Woody Bay Station is one of the original Lynton & Barnstaple Railway stations, opened in 1898 and closed along with the rest of the railway in September 1935.
Purchased in 1995, what you can see today at the station is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the worlds most famous and picturesque narrow-gauge railways, the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
Re-opened as a passenger station in 2004, this is the first stage in rebuilding the much-loved railway that once ran between Lynton and Barnstaple.
We are open nearly all the year round for a train ride of two miles through glorious Exmoor countryside in heritage carriages built exclusively for the railway over 100 years ago. Mainly recovered as garden sheds, these vehicles have now been lovingly restored at great expense to their former glory so that our visitors can experience a taste of what it was like to travel by steam train in the early years of the last century.
Once purchased, tickets allow unlimited travel on the day - subject to availability of space on the trains. You can leave and return later if you like or stay with us all day. We suggest that you allow at least 30 minutes for your visit if including a single train journey.
Your tickets are valid all day to enjoy a ride as many times as you wish. Keep your ticket and you can return and travel for half price as often as you want during the next 28 days.
A Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway Ticket (purchased within the last 7 days) entitles you to a 10% discount.
We charge no entrance fee; car-parking and access to the station area including the toilets is also free. Take as many photos as you like, relax in our gardens/picnic area or the peaceful woodland wildlife reserve or visit our tea-rooms for lunch, snacks and afternoon teas.
Savour one of our Devon Cream Teas with home-baked scones or a luscious hand-made sandwich or slice of cake.
Visit us in the winter when you can cosy-up to our real coal fire whilst enjoying a bowl of warming home-made soup.
Time to spare? You can stay on site or on our trains for as long as you like all day at no extra charge. Several of our visitors come to the station in the morning - have a train ride, something to eat or drink and then go on to visit somewhere else Later in the day they come back for another trip. Works very well for those families whose children need to be persuaded to leave!
Alternatively, take a trip to Killington Lane walk to the pub in Parracombe and return on a later train.
Outside - feel free to use our tea gardens, lawns, picnic area and platforms - all are a perfect place to relax and enjoy the magnificent views of the rolling Devon countryside - have a picnic, play with the children, read a book or just sit and watch the trains go by.
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway is a Registered Charitable Trust owned by its members and is a not for profit social enterprise.
